In closing one world and opening another, only Lain will realize the significance of their presence.Lain, also draws upon a very wide and unusual mix of influences. Konaka, whose other works include Texhnolyze, Serial Experiments Lain is a psychological avant-garde mystery series that follows Lain as she makes crucial choices that will affect both the real world and the Wired. From acclaimed artist of Haibane Renmei, Yoshitoshi ABe. S erial Experiments Lain is no exception. However as the series progresses we cannot help but feel for Lain as a character, her complete immersion into The Wired is both fascinating and disturbing, the resulting revelations of her true nature lead to tragic, horrifying and unsettling fates to those around her.Another one of the strongest elements of the series is it’s art direction, there were a number of 90s anime that were highly experimental in style and structure. Lain has no real friends (except Alice), has a very cold relationship with her family and has no knowledge relating to computers. The emotional centre of the series I find is Lain herself, Lain is severely shy and reclusive who looks much younger than she actually is. For a series so rooted in philosophy and technology you’d be forgiven in thinking that it is a cold and emotionless affair, there however I feel you would be wrong on this one. So, if you will get connected to the world of The Wired and explore the dark and unsettling world of Serial Experiments Lain. And no, I don’t know what the title means either. Also some interesting fan sites recreating the setting of The Wired, be warned both are rather unsettling. Serial Experiments Lain is a truly rewarding experience, disturbing, obtuse and often beautiful. Also of note is the series unsettling use of silence, many scenes play without dialogue or music, the only sound often used is the eerie hum of the Navi (personal computer) which is often used to chilling effect.Hopefully with this short piece I have at least given you some interest in the series.
